PG Casts: Postgres Screencasts While we feature a lot of blog posts in Postgres Weekly, screencasts are more rare. If video is your preferred way of learning, this new collection may be just the thing. Timestamps and Time Zones in PostgreSQL Working with timestamps is often incredibly painful, often due to a mix of misunderstanding and other times due to lack of right tooling. This in depth post sets a good context and shows you the two options and when each makes sense in Postgres. Faceted Search in the Single PostgreSQL Query If you have the need for faceted search in Postgres there’s a number of ways to implement it, this approach uses more of the modern functionality of Postgres: JSONB and GIN Indexes, and throws in full-text search for good measure. BRIN Indexes in PostgreSQL: Correlation, correlation, correlation BRIN indexes have been introduced in PostgreSQL 9. 5. While BRIN indexes are definitely a win, people tend to exagerate and use them ways too frequently, take a look at when they’re actually most helpful here. Scaling Up Rails Apps with PostgreSQL Table Partitioning In the second part of this two-part series the author takes a look at table partitioning in Postgres as a means for scaling your database load and how you integrate it directly to Rails. PGConf Silicon Valley PostgreSQL Conference PGConf Silicon Valley is one of a few upcoming Postgres conferences this fall. Early bird tickets are available as well as it’s CFP now being open, so grab your ticket or submit your talk today. pg_view: Detailed, Real-Time View of Your Postgres & System Metrics A command-line tool that offers a real-time view of your database and system metrics. pgCenter: A 'top'-Like PostgreSQL Statistics Viewer Another command line interface to look at lots of different Postgres stats and information. live   Apply to 100 top tech companies with 1 application Indeed Prime connects top tech talent with top tech companies in the US. RDP klijent u stvari inkapsulira RDP protokol u dva druga protokola. Kada konekcija stigne do TS Gateway mašine, TS Gateway uklanja RPC i HTTP zaglavlja i prosleđuje RDP konekcije ka odgovarajućem Terminal Server ili Remote Desktop računaru.

Headline Why emerging markets are dominating mobile browsing Cost is a major factor stopping most users in emerging markets from gaining access to the web, but now that smart phones are below $40 it's the data that is becoming the sticking point. Native apps are simply too large to download and install so it's up to us building the web to ensure that what we provide is a lean as possible. If your customers or readers will come from emerging markets, these are the people you should be building a baseline for.   Lets Encrypt Leaving Beta, New Sponsors Being secure is important from a security point of view, but having https also allows you to take advantage of http2 and Service Workers as well. Lets Encrypt are on the road to a 100% secure internet and are doing so by giving away free SSL certificates. . . what are you waiting for! Articles   Chat bots, conversation and AI as an interface Are we still building websites if we're using chat bots to communicate our messaging? My friend Al believes that bots are the way of the future, and with many company's jumping on the bandwagon it's becoming more difficult to argue with that idea. At the end of the day the websites that we build are there to provide content or services to our users however and whenever they want to use them. In the same way that we syndicate our content through RSS feeds to RSS Readers, or through Googles Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), or the Facebook Instant Articles now open for everyone. . . the same process of syndicating our content or services into a bot framework interface can be followed. I LOVE the approach that City Mapper have taken with their GoBot, definitely check it out. Release Notes for Safari Technology Preview 2 A few weeks ago we mentioned that the slow moving Safari browser now has a developer version, and this week release 2 is available. Looking for “Trouble” Educating our clients during a web project is almost as important as the delivery of the website itself. They are paying us good money to produce something amazing for them, and if we help them understand more about the web along the way it become a personal growth experience for them as well (and they'll be more likely to get you back for more work). This article looks at some important simple things that we should all be doing. Responsive images-x mess on desktop PPK takes a look at how the x descriptor in responsive images works when zooming. I think the results are expected. A faster FT. com A wonderful article from FT again about why performance matters and how they tested this on their current site. "The speed of the site negatively impacts a user’s session depth, no matter how small the delay. " One amazing video that shows the potential of the physical web Being able to setup and control something on the physical web within 10 seconds on a smartphone. This stuff is only just getting started but it will only become more popular and better supported over time. Tutorials   Flexible Sized Grids with auto-fill and minmax A short tutorial from Rachel Andrew, although we're still looking at developer edition browsers to see this stuff working (for now) How do :nth-child() and nth-of-type really work? I didn't know this about using the nth-child or nth-of-type, it's only a 3 minute video but it's certainly something you should be aware. Web Font Loading Patterns More on loading fonts from Bram Stein. In this article he covers basic font loading, groups of fonts, loading with a timeout, prioritising your loading and how to optimise for caching. The Web Fonts: Preloaded You use web fonts right? Sure, everybody does these days. Zach Leat looks at modern day techniques on how to improve the performance of these loading on our site. No Nonsense: What Really Accelerates WordPress Websites If you use Wordpress here's part one in a tutorial that will help you strip out the slow moving parts and really speed up your site performance. Layout Demos by Jen Simmons These are a set of awesome experiments from Jen Simmons Better Interface Design: Logins, Menus, Toggles And Other Fancy Modules While this article gets a little slated in the comment section for being overly focussed on being flashy and not enough on good user experience. For me they are a great set of demo's that can show how far we can push the web experience in the browser. Think of it like a Paris/Milan/London fashion show. . . no one actually wears the crazy stuff they wear but it inspires. . . and we can all do with some inspiration sometimes. . . and somethings, just sometimes, you'll get a client like Lady Gaga that will need something like that ;) Aligning Text Smartly in CSS A neat little trick to align text center for one line, and to the left for more than one line. Measure your site's performance on Google Using google analytics you can see how well your site performs across different devices. Tools & Resources Totally Tooling Tips: Web Page Test (S3 Mini Tip #3) Web Page Test is a web page that helps you test your web pages - use it! This is a short video with Google Dev's on how you can get the most out of the tool. Visual CSS flexbox builder Webflow is now shipping with Flexbox support. They've got some great initial examples to get you going and a fun little game to play if you're feeling playful iphone-inline-video Make videos playable inline on Safari on iPhone and iPod touch. Introducing iframify Iframify gathers all the styles needed by the node and all its children by parsing the stylesheets and trying styles against the elements to import everything inside the generated iframe. . . . include-media include-media is a Sass library for writing CSS media queries in an easy and maintainable way, using a natural and simplistic syntax. CodePen - Spotify Artist Page A great responsive example of the Spotify Artist page. Examples This week I've taken a closer look at these two sites and what makes them responsively tick behind the scenes. Trent Walton Trent Walton is one of my favourite writers and designers. Each of his articles are well thought out and they always have an art direction running through them making the content just that much more interesting to read. Founders Mantras This is a lovely site! Very reactive and the use of the transitions between each mantra for each day and sliding across to the story behind the Mantra is just lovely.

Articles Adblocking is helping the digital sharks eat the minnows – what’s the solution? Another opinion piece around the ad-blocking saga as the war on ads rages on. Remember the browser wars, remember table layouts, remember fixed width sites, remember not having styling options on the web, remember when there were only a handful of fonts for the web, remember when responsive images weren't possible? The web always seems to have a drama, and so far we've come together to find a solution that works so we can move onto the next problem. . . I'm sure the same thing will happen here but we need you to help with finding that solution. Logo Design For Responsive Websites There is a great article from Cloud4 in the tutorial section on SVG which ties in nicely with this article. More and more logo's have been going from incredibly complex marks to things that are still identifiable across any size. It shouldn't be "make my logo bigger" but instead "make my logo more recognisable". Tutorials 360 Degrees Product Viewer This tutorial will allow you to build a rotating product viewer that will work on mobile and desktops (and everything between). Be careful when using this on mobile though, too many images for a smooth scroll will cause the site to be slow and most likely mean the user won't actually see it. Building a dynamic SVG timer Quite a cool little tutorial on making a timer using SVG to keep thing super crisp across all those devices. . . so many devices. Framer. js Framer. js is ushered in as the new way to prototype your web apps in the browser. If you're looking for something a little more hands on than the more GUI focussed tools that are on the market today then it's worth a look Interactive 3D Mall Map Super neat interactive mall demo and code, and of course it works across all the viewports. Why You Should Stop Installing Your WebDev Environment Locally If you're developing on a local environment then this tutorial and general overview of what Docker can provide you is well worth a read. . . and a trial for your next local project. How Letterspacing Can Make All Caps Easier to Read If you're including text-transform: uppercase; to some of your headings then think about also include some additional letter spacing to improve readability Responsive Logo Composition With SVG Logos are an ideal use-case for SVG. Because they’re typically designed for reproduction and versatility, they’re almost always vector to begin with. (side note I've used SVG for the logo on rwd. is for years, switching the colours to indicate the likely device/viewport you were). Better CSS Drop Caps With “initial-letter” A great overview on how to get this going with a fallback for unsupported browsers and going mobile first responsive. Tools & Resources Flexbox Patterns A great set of patterns that cover tabs, forms, headers, sidebars, card groups and more. Bricklayer Lightweight & independent cascading grid layout library. Inspired by and a lighter alternative to Masonry. Min | A smarter, faster web browser This is a pretty fast little browser that I can see myself using more and more. It's light weight and at the moment not the hog that some of the others are (looking at you Chrome on Mac*). It doesn't have anything in the way of dev tools so it's not practical for work, but for just browsing the web I'm quite enjoying it. (* I probably shouldn't have 89 tabs open) chartd responsive, retina-compatible charts with just an img tag Platforma Wireframe Kit Wireframe kit. . . there's a paid for and a free version to try out GoldenLayout Golden layout is a multi-window javascript layout manager for webapps LINK

New Adobe Dreamweaver CC Now Available Responsive design improvements in the latest version of Dreamweaver makes it easier to work with visual media queries, breakpoints and rows or columns. Dreamweaver has also updated to Bootstrap version 3. 3. 6 and jQuery version 1. 11. 3. Back in 2012 I asked the same 4 questions to a small number of people that contribute consistently to the community through the way of writing and speaking and building out demo's for us to all follow. This year I've asked them to answer those same questions 3 years down the line. . . lets see what they have to say.   Ben Callahan Ben Callahan is the President of Sparkbox, a team of ten people striving to build sites that are a joy to use regardless of the device you're browsing from.  Ben is also the co-founder of the Build Right Workshops.  You can find more of his writing on his website, and you can get in touch with him @bencallahan.   What was the best new implementation of RWD you saw in 2015, and was there a redesign that took your eye? One of my favorite responsive redesigns this year is the new Science Friday Website. It was done by the talented team at Bluecadet. Not only am I a huge fan of the show, but this redesign is full of delicious little animations and a myriad of beautiful approaches to presenting the fantastic content generated by Science Friday.  Check it out, you might learn a thing or two—I know I did!  What are 2 RWD Frameworks/Plugins/Shims/patterns that you always seem to go to? We use a Sass mixin for media queries called sb-media on pretty much every project. It allows us to write small-screen-first queries (using min-width) while still serving larger screen layouts to user agents that don’t support media queries (like IE8). I suppose it will soon outlive its usefulness(it’s from 2013), but we’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of it, for sure. Another tool I’ve been using a ton lately on personal projects isBrowsersync. This free tool has sped up my testing time by providing a local server to hit, along with live reloading, click mirroring and a ton of other features. It’s got to be the easiest-to-use device syncing tool, hence I find myself recommending it constantly these days.   What is the one thing with sites you would like to see improved/developed in 2016? I’m looking for sites to get smarter about the kinds of UI patterns I gravitate toward. The past few years have proven that we can customize content for our users—how about we customize the interface for them as well? Simple example: if I always use search when I come to your site, remember that and prioritize that action for me. If I show a propensity for hierarchical navigation, prioritize that interface. I want sites to be smarter.   If you could offer 1 piece of advice around building responsively what would it be? Gotta start with comparing the needs of the user to the content and functionality you are offering. It doesn’t matter how great the responsiveness is if you’re not offering the right content. This has always been true, but small screens expose the cracks in our armor and force us to deeply consider the priority of the stuff we’re cramming into a site. From 2011, design with a richer canvas. Matt Griffin Matt Griffin is a designer and one of the founders of Bearded. He has a great love for letterpress printing, which he acquired while attending Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he received a BFA in Graphic Design. Matt is an avid advocate for collaboration in design, and has been published in A List Apart and . net magazine. You can follow Matt @elefontpress.   What was the best new implementation of RWD you saw in 2015, and was there a redesign that took your eye? My favorite website of 2015 (responsive or otherwise) is the Chrome experiment featured on https://events. google. com/io2015(you have to click on the little equalizer icon in the bottom right). When I first saw this site, I said aloud: “I don’t think I even know what web design is anymore!”    This is the kind of site that’s the perfect answer to complaints about early RWD being boxy and soulless. It’s a website, but it’s fun and playful. It’s a toy. It’s an experience. It’s the kind of thing that assures me that we’ll still be able to get excited about the webfive years from now.     BTW, if you’d told me ten years ago that my favorite site design would be done by Google, I would have told you that’s proof positive that you’re not a visitor from the future. So, uh … well done, Google!   What are 2 RWD Frameworks/Plugins/Shims/patterns that you always seem to go to?   We’ve been doing a lot of work in the last two years that’s focused on responsive websites that are much more application-y. What I mean by that is that they’re less of a passive content delivery system and constructed of more complicated workflows. What this tends to mean, under the surface of the UI, is that there are a lot of forms involved.     Lately I’m really into natural language forms to make those experiences more readable and pleasurable for users. For instance, at Bearded we’re currently working on a project that has a quiz builder for teachers. Rather than structuring a form with labels and inputs such that it reads:   “Grade: 1st grade; Subject: Math; Category: Geometry”   We’ve structured it as a sentence expressing what the user wants: “I need a quiz for [1st grade] [math] covering [geometry]. ”    One of the aspects I keep in the forefront of my mind is to make sure button text accurately expresses the action the user is taking. No one ever thinks of what they’re doing as “submitting. ” And yet that’s exactly the text you find on most submit buttons. But usually more specific text (e. g. “create a new quiz” or “save” or “look it up”) is more appropriate and less distracting from the task at hand. It keeps a user from stopping at the end of a form and asking “submit? Is that what I want to do? What does that mean in this context?”   Anything we can do to make forms easier and more pleasurable is a boon to the web. We also find ourselves using Filament Group’s Tablesaw, whenever we need responsive data tables.   What is the one thing with sites you would like to see improved/developed in 2016? Navigation patterns. I’m feeling pretty tired of familiar overlapping patterns like primary top-level navigation / secondary vertical-specific navigation / breadcrumbs / etc.     Particularly with large, content-heavy websites, I would love to see navigation get out of the way, become invisible, and yet still allow intuitive, natural, frustration-free ways for users to find what they need. Perhaps that’s a pipe dream, but I’d like to experience some new approaches that make it worth discarding well-known conventional patterns.   If you could offer 1 piece of advice around building responsively what would it be? Take your inspiration from things outside the web. Whether they’re native mobile applications, desktop software, films, cartoons, architecture, novels – find the things you love from other parts of your life experience, and ask yourself “how could I do this on the web?” Then make it happen.     It’s so easy to just start rattling off technical limitations for why the web can’t do something. But it’s so much more fun to start from an idea that excites you, then see how close you can get to that ideal. Limitations be damned.

Headline The Power of Responsive Design Sprints If you're looking at incorporating Agile into your design process you should definitely look at how Jason Grigsby is doing it with the team over at Cloud Four.   Choosing between min-width and max-width media queries Stephen Hay is one of the best at taking an overly complicated issue and breaking into very simple to understand chunks.   Is the Hamburger Menu a Problem? A great look at the UX of a hamburger menu and the story about where it first came from and the design thought around it way back then. I still think it's a keeper. Articles Intrinsic Placeholders with the Picture Element This article from Dave shows how we can remove the repainting on our content when loading in images along side text with the picture element.   Battling BEM – 5 common problems and how to avoid them BEM (Block, Element, Modifier) method of writing CSS has picked up a lot of support, especially when working on large scale applications and with large teams. Here's a few tips of avoiding some known problems  Being Responsive to the Small Things A great article about the importance of container queries and how we can look at incorporating it in todays builds (albeit only through JS at the moment)  Service Worker notes This shake down on the latest in the world of Service Workers has got Scott Jehl's and Jake Archibalds stamp of approval so you know it's a must read  2016 - the year of web streams I think 2016 is definitely the year of performance and more progressive enhancement which also works well with streams. What are streams? Well the first rule about streams is not to cross them, but I'll let Jake cover off the remaining concepts.   Deep Dive into Grid Layout Placement   Vanishing boxes with display contents Tutorials Creating Responsive Hero Text with SVG A neat little trick to get background images into responsive SVG text, nice.   Optimising SVGs for Web Use SVG is where we are getting excited these days but it's not as simple as just switching to SVG and everything will be better. We can still improve upon SVG file size in the same way we do with JPG and PNG and this 3 part tutorial will show you a few ways to do just that.   Everything I know about responsive web typography with CSS There's many ways to approach responsive typography and in this article Zell looks at using a Sass Mixin to make your life a little easier. The article starts with px values but don't be discouraged, everything is clear in the end.   Pure CSS masonry layouts Resources & Tools Performance Budget Builder Brad Frost has put together a great tool for creating performance budgets on Codepen and is up there and ready for you to use on your next (or current) project.   Safari 9: Using Responsive Design Mode I'm not sure if you picked this up over xmas but Safari now also has a mobile emulation mode (or RWD mode as they're calling it).   Flexbox Responsive Site Builder I couldn't share this over Xmas but there's a free beta version of Responsive Site Builder from Coffee Cup that is packaged with an article on FlexBox and instructions on how you can use the tool to play around with the settings to see how it works (from a visual approach rather than a coding approach). Please note I've only tried this on mac, PC I can only assume runs fine too.   Responsive Calendar A while ago I added this pattern to the site by using the best RWD Calendar example I could find in GitHub. Hello and Woohoo, it's #200!!! Hello everyone and thank you for being a subscriber for the 200th edition of responsive design weekly. If this is your first week, welcome, but please note that this is not the typical weekly email; for this week I’m saying thank you to you for opening your inbox and being a huge part of my life every week.  Lets look on a reflection of the past 200 editions and look at some of the ups and downs. Do not despair though, for those of you that are just here to keep on top of what’s going on I’ve got you covered with a few quick links up front.   Use `rem` for Global Sizing; Use `em` for Local Sizing   By applying rems to the root of each module, and em's to everything else you're able to more tightly control the sizes and layout of things across a variety of viewports and arrangements.   Coding a book Books are one of my side projects at the moment, or at least converting them to websites that work everywhere is anyway. Lara's Designing for Performance is one of the examples I use so I'm excited about her sharing her exact steps to publish it online.   The Very Best Grid Framework Planned for release in 2017 this will be the ultimate grid framework that does away with foundation and bootstrap. The ultimate grid framework is coming, and it's called Grid Layout. (not actually a framework, but the spec)   Case Study: Here’s How Moving to Responsive Design Website Helped Our Brand I haven't posted a case study about the reasons for moving to RWD for a while because, well it's just how things are done now. That said I'm sure some of your still run into the question so here's some figures to throw in their face (disclaimer: don't throw anything in peoples faces)  Aligning Content Work with Agile Processes RWD is all about the content, and now you can get your content alongside the other cool kids by doing in Agile style.   Web typography is broken. Here’s how we can fix it While we're on the topic of content. . . content works even BETTER when it's set against beautiful typography

Articles   Google's Mobilegeddon Aftermath Now that we're heading towards April and the anniversary of Google's Mobilegeddon this article takes a look at whether it influenced the way we build sites. Well the good news is that websites with a mobile presence are on the rise. . . but even without this move from Google I wonder how different the stats might have been. The web’s original sin The past few weeks have had a running theme of ad blockers and how we can continue to deliver great content freely. This week PPK weighs in as one of the individuals that has probably been producing free content for one of the longest times. While he doesn't claim to have the perfect answer he raises a lot of excellent questions and thoughts on how we've grown to expect content on the web to be always free. Finishing touches & new foundations A responsive (issues) newsletter inside a responsive design newsletter. . . take that meta. RICG have been quiet lately but are back with a few updates. Progressive Enhancement Makes Me Sad Is progressive enhancement really the silver bullet. Does anyone actually think about the people that have to build these things? Probably not. (read with a pinch of salt and a large portion of sarcasm) One weird trick to get online — designers hate it! I think I love Bruce Lawson. . . or at least I love this article from Bruce. In a world of fantastically immersive and deeply interactive website designs we need to remember who are the users we are designing and building websites for, and what situation will they be in when accessing that content. 7 Reasons B&H Photo's Mobile Site is Best-in-Class  A great in-depth review of the do's for mobile websites. This isn't just limited to mobile either, all of the points that are made in the article are true from responsive sites across all viewports. Media feature for viewing distance This is a great conversation around how you can accurately display content on screens and variable distances, and on variable interaction types. . . . . . which leads nicely into the next article around FT labs going big! Big FT | FT Labs The process of building large scale displays on the web. Logical Breakpoints For Your Responsive Design   Tutorials   Managing Mobile Performance Optimization A lot of these recommendations can be carried across for any website performance. . . in fact all of them. Accessible, Simple, Responsive Tables The title might be a little misleading, but the results are great! The examples used are based on setting up your markup with DIVs and making them work like tables. While I'm not convinced this is the go to approach I can see the benefits of using it in some situations. Shoot for the Moon Recently we had to position 4 divs right up next to each other, all with a crazy gradient, and all had to be responsive. Using percentages on these caused a thin white line to appear between them at certain breakpoints. Chris looks at what causes this and how we can over come sub-pixel rendering issues. Flex items and min-width 0 A little trick for anyone building their responsive layouts with flexbox. The copy & paste guide to your first Service Worker I've been meaning to try out Service Workers on SimpleThin. gs and this article from Remy Sharp finally gave me that push I needed. It's as basic an approach for service workers can get, but you're up and running in under 5 minutes (provided that you're already serving on https). PX, EM or REM Media Queries? A long time ago we featured the cloud four blog, the ems have it, but it's nice to see this article revisiting a question that comes up often on our contact form. flexbox in 5 minutes We've covered Flexbox froggy and tower defence, this will get you all up to date with flexbox in 5 minutes. Easy Masonry Layout With Flexbox     Frameworks & Presentations Foundation for Emails 2 is Here! If you're not lucky enough to be using Campaign Monitor or MailChimp (yay) you might be coding emails from scratch. I'm so sorry. But not anymore because Foundation for Emails has been updated to version 2 and all the testing has been done for you (that's not a pass to skip testing though. Embracing the Network If there's one video that you should be watching over the long weekend it's this one. Not only is Patrick witty, charming, and a bit of a dashing gentleman — he also delivers one hell of a good talk on understanding and embracing the network on the web. CSS Protips This week I came across lots of different CSS pro tips. First it was Vitalys presentation on front end hacks (below) and then it was this set of Smitty's collection of CSS Pro tips. Dirty Tricks From The Dark Corners Of Front-End There are 300+ slides in this presentation. Death by PowerPoint right? WRONG. Vitaly has some wonderful tips and tricks, some dirty and some not, on how to wrangle HTML & CSS & JS to get just what you want. Thanks That's all for this week but before I go I just wanted to finish on one more thanks for the past 200 editions and all the great feedback from last week, you help make the newsletter a joy to prepare each week. Thanks for reading, see you next week. Cheers, Justin.

Instead of drawing wireframe boxes I've been putting cardboard ones together and filling them with lots and lots and lots of stuff I've collected over the years. There was a moment over the weekend that I realised the CSS on my site was much the same as the house — it all made sense when it first moved in but over time I've added bits and pieces to improve things, removed items, rearranged pages/rooms and I've still got all the junk that just isn't used anymore. So once the move has happened and life resumes I'll be turning my attention back to the site for a redesign, a more simplified version that I always push onto clients and never seem to follow myself. Enough of me though, you're here for links so links you will have!  Headline On ads and ad blocking A great insight from one of the Financial Times developers on ads and ad blocking. Aside from being a great read on the problem and offering some solutions, one of the bits I didn't know was the use of bone conduction to distribute audio content. . . amazing.   Fax Machine-Responsive Design: Why Your Business Needs FMRD Today! In todays world we often forget the tools that can really make a difference. With the Fax machine making a comeback in 2016 it's time to see how to make them responsive. Happy April Fools! Articles   10 Shortcuts for Effective Responsive Design Some great tips on things to remember when designing responsively Offline First: Love the Idea, Hate the Name I've always said "hate is a very strong word" and where ever possible I try and use "dislike" in its place. I think Aaron is trying to get the Love/Hate thing going in the title. I agree that the term always comes with an explanation or justification that "Yes, you need a network connectionfirst but then it's all rainbows and butterflys" or my native friends pointing out that the web needs a network and will never be truly offline first (but fail to realise the required connection to download their own apps from the app store. . . . all 58Mb of it). ViewportAPI The proposal for adding a visualViewport object on document that contains the properties of the visual viewport. CSS and Scalability A great write up on the silly things that we sometimes do when writing CSS and a better approach. Tutorials   Optimize the size of PNG images automatically on your webserver with optipng Get optipng running on your server so your png assets will always be better for performance. What's the deal with declaring font properties on @font-face? By including more finite declarations in your @font-face you will cut down the font downloads and ensure only what is being used will be downloaded. Customizing the WordPress Admin Experience for Clients Not strictly responsive but I do a lot of work on wordpress with my various sites and clients. This will help you organise the items in the admin interface to make a little more sense to users that might not go in there as much. Tools & Resources NKD - (NAKED) Jekyll Minimal scaffolding for a responsive HTML5/SCSS Jekyll project Learn Online Marketing We all have them. The friends, aunt, uncle, cousin, school mate, neighbour, work colleague. . . . they've got a great idea and need a website. . . could you help out? While I usually point them in the direction of Squarespace and back away this is a great resource for anyone to improve their overall online skills OUTSIDE of the code. Welcome to edition #203 House moved. . . . but I forgot the internet. This week I've been very quickly using up my mobile data plan while the internet is still trying to find its way to our new place and has made me appreciate just how awesome some sites can be, and just how crappy others can be. For the love of bandwidth, no more pictures of people eating salad, not more stock photography. . . if it's not adding some context or further understanding of the content then please please please just leave it out. If websites whose entire purpose is to show photo's can create a faster lite version then we can all do the same. During the move I also came across a box of unallocated RWD T-Shirts so I've come up with a plan on how to offload them. . . more about that at the end of the newsletter though. Off to the links!  Headline Progressive Web Apps have leapfrogged the native install model … but challenges remain This week our headline is from  Michael Mahemoff who looks at the current state of Progressive Web Apps and finds that we're in a pretty damn good position, but still there are hurdles that we need to overcome before we can truly win a face off against native apps. Great read to get up to speed on the situation.   Building the UI for the new The Times website With The Times website getting a responsive overhaul you can bet there was a tonne of work that went into it. . . and you're not wrong. Fortunately front end developer Pedro Duarte takes us through the process from collaboration, UI Structure, CSS, Refactor, QA and the Styleguide.   Our Sponsor New! Responsive design in Adobe Muse CC Create beautiful, custom websites that dynamically scale to any size screen, browser or device — without having to code or use restrictive templates. Design freely on the canvas, choose breakpoints to control how your content will appear in different size browsers and more. Sponsor RWD Weekly and reach more than 28,053 responsive champions     Articles   Discoverability or progressive web apps With this week looking a little deeper into Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) it makes sense to think a little bit more about their discoverability. HTML pub crawl Lets all work together to make PDF's on the web a thing of the past (or an exception to the rule) Using HTML publications on GOV. UK - part 1 The pub crawl started way about 14 months ago with this post on HTML publications. A lot of people comment that the PDF is better for printing, but if you use a little something called a media query (not sure if you've heard of them, they're kind of a big deal in this responsive web design thing) then you can target styles specifically for printing and it does a pretty good job. Navigating the new map of responsive imagery another cracking video from John over at Web Directions, this week it's all about using responsive images. If you're based in Sydney then you've just missed the Sydney Respond Conference, but you can catch it in Melbourne on the 11-12th April. Still think you don't need HTTPS? A few reasons why now is the time to be getting https running on your own site. HTTPS is Hard   Tutorials   Moving from HTML Grid Systems to CSS Grid Systems About 2 weeks ago I wasn't aware of Zell and the work he's done, but since catching his talk on RWD Typography at the RWD Summit last week I've found that I could write a whole newsletter dedicated to his work. This is a great walk through on how you can start working with Susy Grids. Annotating Your (Critical) CSS I've looked a different ways that you can achieve Critical CSS, whether it be programatically, manually, done with an existing code base or a new one. This tutorial explains how it can be done using PostCSS and PostCSS-Split. Are you Single? Snook looks at three different ways you might go about crafting your CSS and HTML when it comes to trying to reuse existing declarations and not having to duplicate or override things down the line. CSS Grid and CSS Regions A nice layout example with CSS regions to get text to flow through a grid in and around images. It seems as though CSS regions isn't really taking off at the moment and no one is looking to support them too much so if you like what you see be vocal! Sassier z-index Management For Complex Layouts   Tools & Resources Pattern by Etsy Etsy are stepping up and providing users with the ability to set up and design their very own stores. . . and with people like Lara Hogan in the background making sure that everything is performant as it can be you know this is going to be a winning idea. A Complete Guide to Grid CSS Tricks is always good for a CSS Trick or two. Their Flex Box reference has helped me out on more occasions than I'd like to admit and now they've got the same resource for Grids. Spectacle CodeSlide: Present code with style A great tool for showcasing code highlights while presenting. Performance Widget FT Labs have written about their Chrome extension and put it up on github for all to use.   Finally So last week was April Fools and I warned you all about being careful. Unfortunately I was a little sleepy when I arrived in to work on Friday but I was delighted to see Oreo cookies on the kitchen table. I took one while I was on the phone and thought to myself. . . "I didn't know that Oreo did a mint cookie?!?".  It turns out they do not. It was toothpaste. Damn it. Now I also mentioned that I was offloading some of the RWD shirts and I am doing so through the Backpocket. You can pick one up for £20 or get one free with every order of 2 sets of RWD Notebooks. Thanks for reading, see you next week. Cheers,Justin.

IO: Potrebna fleksibilnost i kontrola: Ako vam je potrebna potpuna kontrola nad komunikacijom i želite da implementirate vlastitu logiku ponovnog povezivanja i otkrivanja grešaka, onda su WebSockets bolji izbor. Brzina razvoja i jednostavnost: Ako prioritet brzi razvoj i jednostavna implementacija dvosmerne komunikacije sa dodatnim funkcionalnostima, Socket. IO je bolja opcija. Karakteristika WebSocket Socket. IO Tip protokola Osnovni protokol Biblioteka na vrhu WebSockets Nivo apstrakcije Niži nivo Viši nivo Dodatne funkcionalnosti Ne Da (automatsko ponovno povezivanje, otkrivanje grešaka, itd.
