Osnovni cilj WI je efikasno uspostavljanje buduće generacije proizvoda, sistema, servisa i aktivnosti na Webu. Takođe, WI predstavlja ključno i veoma značajno područje IT u sferi primene poslovne inteligencije (Business Intelligence - BI). WI je moguće koristiti u različitim sistemima i aplikacijama [1]: Business Intelligence – IT istraživačka kuća Gartner, početkom 1990-ih, objavljuje kovanicu »business intelligence«, kojom definiše proces transformacije neobrađenih podataka, nastalih prikupljanjem tokom izvođenja različitih poslovnih operacija i transakcija, u oblik koji se može upotrebiti; E-Commerce kupovina i prodaja roba i usluga na Webu; E-Business – obuhvata usluge koje se odnose na kupce, saradnju sa poslovnim partnerima; E-Community – predstavlja način za interaktivno organizovanje pojedinaca sa zajedničkim interesovanjima. Članovi određene e-community zajednički istražuju interesne oblasti, promovišu nove ideje i aktivnosti, doprinose povećanju znanja koje je u fokusu e-community; E-Finance – obuhvata sve elektronske aktivnosti i transakcije povezane sa finansijskim uslugama. Elektronske aktivnosti se sprovode korišćenjem Interneta ili njegovih elektronskih prethodnika: dial-up e-bankarstvo, telefonsko bankarstvo, bankomati - ATMs (Automated Teller Machines); E-Government – obuhvata dostavu vladinih servisa korišćenjem elektronskih sredstava: telefona, faxa, Interneta i mobilnih telefona. E-Government omogućuje transparentnu i jeftinu interakciju između građanstva i vlade (G2C), vlade i poslovnih kompanija (G2B), kao i unutar samog sistema vlade (G2G); E-Learning – obuhvata upotrebu elektronskih aplikacija i servisa za učenje, kao što su: učenje korišćenjem Weba (Web-based learning), učenje zasnovano na upotrebi računara, virtualne učionice, digitalna saradnja u procesu učenja; Intelligent Enterprise Portals – obuhvata klasu aplikacija koje omogućuju dinamički i korisnički personalizovani pristup internim i eksternim informacijama jedne organizacije. Za razliku od statičkih web strana, portali omogućuju integrisanje podataka koji dolaze iz različitih izvora i u različitim formatima; E-Publishing – obuhvata proces kreiranja elektronskih dokumenata, njihovog arhiviranja, održavanja i distribuiranja elektronskih dokumenata korišćenjem elektronskih medija; E-Science – suština naučne saradnje je u mogućnosti pristupa naučnika i istraživača velikoj kolekciji podataka, korišćenje široke skale kompjuterskih resursa sa visokim performansama u pretraživanju; Intelligent Web Information Systems – obuhvata sve inteligentne informacione sisteme koji se mogu primeniti na Webu; Web-Based EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) – omogućuje nastavak upotrebe EDI sistema u e-commerc lancu; Measuring and Analyzing Web Merchandising – metode za procenu i analizu trgovaca i trgovačkih transakcija na Webu; Web-based Direct Marketing and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) – obuhvata metode za sprovođenje direktnog marketinga na Webu, kao i CRM marketinga. CRM se odnosi na metodologiju, software i Internet mogućnosti koje preduzeću pomažu u efikasnom upravljanju i organizovanju odnosa sa kupcima. Istovremeno, WI je povezana i sa mnogim oblastima koje se zbog svoje kompleksnosti postepeno izvajaju i specijalizuju ka određenoj problematici Weba.
